![]() ![]() ![]() “We were actually living that stuff, so as we got a bit older, we realised that there are amazing, funny characters in this world of pirate radio. And we grew up with a lot of pirate radio stations around our area and everything, so even though we are kind of spoofing the culture, we are the culture. We were either rappers or producers, Seapa and Hugo, Grindah and Beats, they were doing pirate radio for real. “A lot of us, we all did music, growing up. Whilst the film spoofs pirate radio culture, it also comes from a place of love and a lived experience, as Asim explained. “And then the more weird stuff is more my mates, my uncles, a bit of me really. My dad could walk in here right and you all would be completely smitten by him. “All of the good bits of Chabuddy, the charm, the charisma, the eternal optimism, that’s totally my dad. His character is partially based on his father, as he explained to Gaby and Sam. Having co-created and starred in the TV series, the 33-year-old is one of the film's writers, as well as reprising his role as hapless manager Chabuddy G. In 2017, People Just Do Nothing won a BAFTA and Royal Television Society award for Best Scripted Comedy. We made something from nothing, you know what I mean? And it’s a really, really lovely journey to now think that our posters are on buses and we’ve got a film out. And when Ash Atalla came on board, we were like, ‘Perfect’, because he produced The Office, and we had that dry, very realistic comedy that you watch and you think it’s real.”Īsim added, “Honestly, it’s just a bunch of mates. We were joking but it was so realistic, because it was a mockumentary format, and we loved The Office. People got really angry, because they were like, ‘Oh these jobseeking idiots, rinsing our tax money’. I used to film all of it on my camera and edit it, and we put it on YouTube, and people thought it was real. “They were sketches of the characters, and just us messing around. And we ended up just filming some stuff, putting it on YouTube. West London, Brentford, Hounslow kind of area. Asim told Gaby Roslin and Sam Pinkham, who are in this week for Chris, how the Kurupt FM boys got together. The movie is released in cinemas today (Wednesday 18th August). People Just Do Nothing: Big In Japan is the film continuation of the popular BBC mockumentary series which follows a pirate radio station run by a bunch of mates, playing UK garage and drum ‘n’ bass music from Brentford in West London. The comedian, writer and actor joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky to talk about the return of the Kurupt FM gang, who appear to have finally hit the big time when news reaches them that one of their songs has been used on a popular game show in Japan.
